The Many Benefits of Having Your Own Garden
Article by Steinharter Bierly
Many people enjoy gardening, a practice that has been around for many thousands of years. Some people choose to garden at different times of the year, and therefore may plant herbs or flowers, even certain vegetables, all year long. In this article we’ll be exploring some of the benefits of gardening.
One of the number one reasons to garden is that it’s a wonderful way to relax and get rid of stress. Getting busy in your garden is a wonderful way to forget about any problems you have, as the modern world is certainly stressful. The feeling of being around the earth and nature will make you feel more centered, even though all of your problems won’t just go away. When we’re under stress, we tend to be too much in our heads, focusing on problems or situations that are frustrating. Because gardening is a physical and very practical activity it gives us a way of focusing our energy positively. Your garden can be a nice refuge from the everyday stresses of life, even if you can only make time for a few hours each week.
It is possible to lower your food bill, especially in regard to vegetables, if you have your own garden and harvest it everyday. Due to their price, people stay away from greens, vegetables, and fruits because of the outrageous prices that grocery stores charge. People that grow their own vegetables and fruits don’t have this problem. It is a good thing to have, especially in a recessive economy, so that you can count on that food each and everyday. Having your own supply of food is a good idea regardless of the situation. You will always have the comfort of knowing that food is available if you have a garden, even if the local grocery store does not get a delivery. Regardless of what time of year it is, a garden will make you self-sufficient and ready for any problem that comes your way.
Even going on a nature walk is hard to do, when your schedule is so busy that you can’t find the time. It is relaxing to be outside enjoying the earth, and that is what you can get when you take up gardening. To visit a forest or meadow might take a long drive, unless you live in a rural area. Being part of nature is one of the benefits of gardening as you watch your flowers and plants grow, even if there are only a few of them. The fresh, natural air that you find being out in a natural surrounding will renew your state of mind, and energize your health. The best reason for doing most anything is improving your health.
Most people that have never had a garden before may not realize the benefits of having one. Improvements will definitely be seen in your physical health and also the way that you feel. From the physical benefits due to the exercise, or the mental benefits of simply relaxing while working, a garden is a great thing to start today.
